This week Durham Constabulary issued letters to its 1,160-strong civilian workforce, including police community support officers, specialist analysts and crime scene investigators, advising that their posts are being considered for redundancy, as a result of cutbacks, and that the 90-day statutory consultation period had started. Local MP, Pat Glass, said in response: “PCSOs, special analysts, crime scene investigators and other members of the civilian workforce in North West Durham are a critical part of the police force. “PCSOs provide a visible presence on the streets and interact with the public; they deter crime and provide reassurance to people....

Yesterday afternoon Pat Glass MP attended the Save Our Schools protest rally in Westminster, organised by the teaching unions, with local teacher Mr Mark Edmundson from Consett Community Sports College. The rally was attended by hundreds of MPs, councillors, teachers, parents and school children who came to express their anger and disappointment at the Tory/Lib-Dem Coalition Government’s decision to axe Labour’s Building Schools for the Future programme. This scheme would have provided over 700 school rebuilds in communities around the UK. BSF was the biggest single government investment in improving school buildings for over 50 years, rebuilding or renewing every...

Pat Glass MP has spoken in the Academies Bill debate expressing her fears on the treatment of SEN children under the proposed new arrangements for Academies. An extract of Hansard is below: Pat Glass (North West Durham) (Lab): Coming from my background, having worked for 25 years in education and particularly in special educational needs, I am used to making decisions about children and young people based upon what works for them and what is in their best interests, not upon ideology or my own philosophical beliefs. I am therefore concerned about the speed with which the...

Local Labour MP, Pat Glass has slammed the Liberal Democrats and Tories for voting against a plan to protect local pensioners from the VAT hike. The Commons vote came as new research showed Britain's pensioners will be stung by an £8 billion VAT bill over the course of this Parliament. There are over one-hundred thousand pensioners living in County Durham, all of whom could be affected. Worse, figures hidden in the Budget show that local pensioners will be hit every year by changes that hit them in the pocket; From January, pensioners will face a £400...
