NEW MP ELECTED TO SERVE ON EDUCATION SCRUTINY BODY

Pat Glass, new MP for North West Durham, has been elected to serve on the Education select committee.

Pat has gained one of only five Labour places on the prestigious Education Select Committee.

This is a powerful committee that not only scrutinises proposed legislation on education but also holds the Secretary of State for Education and his Ministers to account. Ministers can be summoned' and questioned, sometimes robustly, about their plans.

The committee is extremely popular amongst MPs and it is quite rare for new MPs to be elected onto it straight away.

Pat said:

"I am delighted to have gained a place on this committee. It is important to have someone who has an in depth knowledge of the education system holding the new coalition government to account. I will use my education experience to ensure that children, young people and their teachers get the very best and that there are no stealth cuts in provision and funding. "
