2012 Constituency Dinner
At a meeting in the House of Commons yesterday (6th July 2010) Pat Glass MP was elected vice chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for local democracy.
The APPG for local democracy is a grouping of MPs and peers from all parties who meet to raise awareness of the important role that town and parish councils can play in supporting local government.
Pat will bring direct experience to this role given her experience as a councilor on Lanchester Parish Council, a position that she still holds.
Pat said:
“It is important to ensure that local democracy continues to thrive in the UK. This is particularly true at a time when local government is suffering severe cuts to its budget which contradicts the coalition government’s claim to support localism.”
“I support local democracy and believe that Parish and Town Councils are crucial to bringing government and decision-making closest to the people. I will be seeking to highlight the valuable work that Parish and Town Councils do in Parliament. “
The National Association of Local Council supports the group and will work closely with Pat and the other officers in highlighting particular town and parish council issues. The group will meet regularly through the year to highlight how local communities and town and parish council can work together and argue for this tier of local government to be included in legislation.
