PAT GLASS MP STEPS UP FIGHT TO SAVE OUR SCHOOLS

Local MP Pat Glass is launching a campaign to ‘Save our Schools’ following the decision by the Tory-Lib Dem government to cancel new school buildings for Parkside in Willington, Wolsingham Community College and St Bedes RC School in Lanchester. The new academy to be built in Consett is also under severe threat from the coalition as the funding is currently ‘under discussion. ‘

Pat Glass MP is urging parents and teachers to back the campaign by signing a petition to reverse the cuts to local schools.

Teachers from Consett Community Sports College will also be travelling to Westminster this Monday for a lobby of Parliament to protest against the cuts. Pat will also be attending the rally.

Pat Glass, Labour MP for North West Durham, said:

“The decision by the Tory-Lib Dem government to cancel the planned new school buildings in North West Durham was a huge disappointment for parents, teachers and young people.

“I am determined to fight against these unfair and unnecessary cuts which will not just damage the education of children in North West Durham but will cost many local jobs too. This was an investment in the future of children and young people which has been cruelly snatched away.

“That’s why I’m urging everybody in North West Durham to back my campaign to Save Our Schools. Sign up by getting a petition from my office or visiting Labour’s shadow education secretary Ed Balls’ campaign site at www.save-our-schools.org.uk

“We need to get the Education Secretary Michael Gove, who has already made a shambolic announcement full of errors, to think again and stop these cuts.”

Labour’s Shadow Children and Education Secretary Ed Balls added:

“Michael Gove’s axe to new school buildings in North West Durham and across the country is disastrous news for thousands of teachers, parents and pupils who have been expecting this much-needed investment.

“The Tory-Lib Dem cuts to Labour’s school building programme are not inevitable or unavoidable, they are a political choice. They’re cutting much-needed investment in new school buildings for many young people, to pay for a few ‘free market’ schools for a minority. That’s not fair which is why I’m backing Pat’s campaign to Save our Schools and fight these cuts all the way.”
